Chapter 6
The knock on the door pulled Sean from a deep sleep and the scent of coffee when the door opened was heaven. He moved a little and his body literally screamed at him to stay still. Jeez, was there a single muscle that wasn't feeling the accident yesterday?
"Okay, old man?" Jake asked as he handed over the big mug of coffee.
"Fuck" was all Sean could manage. Dizziness assailed him and he blinked to clear the fuzziness in his head. He hadn't even registered at first that Jake had called him old man, a throwback to finding they had birthdays a week apart and were born in the same year with Sean being older by just seven days. Jake sounded calm and thoughtful and certainly not as if he had woken up with a hangover or a desperate need to kill Sean. He wasn't smiling or indicating he was unhappy either. In fact his expression was carefully blank.
"You gonna be up to going down to the car?" Jake asked. "We have snowmobiles to get us over the deepest of the snow." He leaned over and shone a small light into Sean's eyes and then pressed the lump on Sean's forehead. Only a stubborn will to get on with what needed to be done stopped him from hissing at the pain.
Sean wasn't stupid. Every agent knew their limits and just how far they could push against those limits. He wasn't sure that physically he was up to walking three-quarters of a mile in deep snow and clung to the idea of the snowmobile more than he should. The damn things were physically difficult to steer in new snow and some of his muscles were little more than limp spaghetti. He knew enough that he would just be holding Jake back, still his stubbornness won out.
"I'll be fine," he said. He was getting damn good at this lying business.
"There's bacon and toast in the kitchen, snow weather gear in the entrance hall closet. We're going in thirty."
"Need more coffee," Sean managed to say. He groaned as Jake knocked his hand away from the coffee and instead placed pills in the middle of his palm along with handing him a glass of water.
"Take these," he instructed.
"I don't need pills."
"Take them, you stubborn bastard."
Sean didn't argue but he did as he was told with a frown on his face. Meds took the edge off the pain but left him wooly. He didn't want to be like that.
Bandages wrapped in more plastic he then showered as best he could. Dressed, he grabbed toast and bacon and then rummaged in the closet for waterproof pants. It was then a case of adding layer on layer from there. His head ached and his shoulder was on fire but whatever meds Jake had given him had certainly taken the edge off of both.
As he dressed he caught sight of Jake's room through the open door. The quilt was in a heap in the middle of the bed and the still nearly full glass of whisky was by the bed.
